It was a hot one this past weekend as the South Region of Texas BASS
Nation held its final event on Coleto Creek. Nineteen anglers showed up
for this event and withstood the heat and all the pleasure craft as the
crowded lake shut the fish down and weights did not live up to the
expectations Coleto Creek is known. One of the anglers did figure out
how to bag a five fish stringer that was heavy enough to take First
Place and Big Bass. Congratulations to Dennis Lala with his 15.87 lbs
and a toad of a Big Bass 7.14 lbs. Second Place honors went to Steve
Zorn with five fish weighing 15.59. See full results.
Canyon Lake hosted stop number 5 of the TBN South Region.
Good keepers were hard to come by as Canyon Lake held a tight grip on
the larger fish. Lots of fish under the fourteen inch limit were
not hard to come by as reported by the eighteen competitors fishing the
Rich Shock bested the field with a winning five fish stringer of 11.62
pounds and loaded up the scales with a Big Bass of 4.11 pounds. Second
Place honors went to Frank Garcia weighing in with his five best fish
for 9.72 pounds. See complete results.
Last stop of the year will be held on Coleto Creek Lake, Sunday June 11.
Stop #4 for the South Region on Amistad is history. Mild winds and
bright blue bird skies after the front on Saturday did not seem to put
the fish in lock jaw mode. Twenty-three anglers competed in this event
with the majority of the field boating a five fish limit. From
conversations with several anglers no certain bait or technique seem to
dominate. Fish were caught mostly up shallow, 10 feet or less on items
such as jigs, plastics, swim jigs, crankbaits and top water.
Congratulations to Trevor Rogge of Coleto Bassmasters on his win with a
bag totaling 16.99; Second Place went to Larry Nors of Coleto
Bassmasters with 15.21 and Third Place honors were taken by Kenny Henry
of Coleto Bassmasters with 15.05. Big Bass honors goes to Mike Katzer of
Canyon Lake Bass Club tipping the scales at 7.94 pounds. See full results.
Falcon was not very forth giving on the heavy weights she is famous for
this past weekend as the South region held two separate tournaments.
Saturdays weights were light with a winning weight of just over eleven
pounds. Sundays winning weight of over eighteen pounds which gave all of
the anglers a little more satisfaction in knowing that Falcon wasn’t
going to get the best of them.
Saturday Ted Sprencel with 11.45 took First Place, with Craig Crim
taking Second Place with 9.84 and rounding out Third Place was Cory
Lieta with 9.67. Buford Estep Sr was crowned Big Bass Winner with 6.83. See complete results.
Sunday Frank Garcia captured First Place with a winning stringer of
18.04, followed by Jerry Dela Fuente with 15.43 for Second Place and Big
Bass of 7.60 pounds, Third Place was awarded to Trevor Rogge with 14.75. See complete results.
Not a bad weekend on Lake Amistad as the South Texas Region TBN competed in its first event of 2017. With 22 anglers participating in the event seems like everybody caught fish. Problem was finding the quality big
bites and for some even keepers was a serious challenge. Majority of the field had limits that came on plastics in shallow waters to deep cranking. Roger Montejano prevailed with the largest five fish weighing in at 15.54. Derick Kuyrkendall coming in Second place 14.87 as well as Big Bass tipping the scales at 7.37 (click on thumbnail to view larger pic) and Danny Snyder ending up in Third Place with 13.76.
